What exactly is biltong?
Biltong is air-dried beef. Whole cuts are cured in vinegar and spices, then hung in moving air and left to dry slowly, with no heat, no smoke and no cooking. It’s a traditional South African method that produces beef that is tender, sliceable and distinctly beef-forward rather than tough and chewy.
How is it different from beef jerky?
The biggest difference is how it’s made. Jerky is typically cooked through heat-drying or smoking and is often marinated with sweeter ingredients. Biltong is never heated. It’s cured with vinegar, salt and spices, then dried using air alone.
The result is a more tender, beef-forward texture with very little sugar. BullTong Africa contains under 0.8g of sugar per 35g serving.
Is it halal?
Yes. BullTong Africa is 100% Halal certified, with the certification mark printed on every pack.
How much protein is actually in it?
A lot for such a compact snack. BullTong Africa delivers 19.4g of protein per 35g pack and 49g per 90g pack, equivalent to roughly 55g of protein per 100g.
The 35g serving contains just 98 calories and 1g of carbohydrates. It’s whole-food protein from beef rather than a formulated protein bar.
What’s actually in it?
The base is beef, vinegar, sea salt, coriander and black pepper, with additional ingredients depending on the flavour. Spicier varieties may include chilli, cayenne, garlic or paprika, while sweeter varieties may include a little honey or brown sugar.
BullTong Africa is gluten-free and made with no added MSG. The complete ingredients list is printed on every pack.
Which flavour should I start with?
Start with Traditional Hunters if you want the classic biltong experience, built around beef, salt and coriander.
Choose BBQ for something smoky or Chutney for a fruitier, tangier profile. All three have no heat.
How spicy are the spicy ones?
Three of the six flavours bring the heat:
Honey Peri: 6/10, sweet first with a warming finish
Peri Peri: 7/10, a proper spicy kick
African Heat: 10/10, the hottest of the range
If heat isn’t your thing, stick with Traditional Hunters, BBQ or Chutney.
Does it need to be refrigerated?
No. BullTong Africa is shelf-stable and sealed for convenient storage. Keep unopened packs somewhere cool and dry. No fridge and no preparation required.
How long does it keep?
Check the best-before date printed on the back of each pack. Once opened, reseal the pouch and enjoy it within a few days for the best texture and freshness.
Biltong will continue to dry when exposed to air, so keeping the pack properly resealed matters.
